Ginger Tea may help fight Migraine if taken at the onset
If you feel a migraine coming on, you can stop the pain before it starts. How? Try making a pot of ginger tea and drinking it.
There has been evidence that ginger tea may combat the onset of migraine due to the ability of ginger to block the effects of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are substances that cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain, which leads to migraine. These substances are lipid compounds found in human and animal tissue. Prostaglandins are also responsible for producing redness, heat and swelling during an infectious attack on the body. Though the results are still experimental, 1/3 teaspoon of fresh of powdered ginger or 3 or 4 slices of sliced ginger infused in boiling water taken as ginger tea is believed to help arrest migraine even before it starts. Experts recommend taking the ginger tea at the moment when it is felt that a migraine might start. The anti-inflammatory attributes of ginger have been recognized for centuries. There have been many scientific efforts to prove and reinforce this long-held regard for the herb. In the early 1970s, scientific studies identified ginger as an herbal medicinal product that seems to share similar pharmacological properties with that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Some of ginger's chemical constituents are believed to help inhibit the induction of certain genes and enzymes that are involved in the inflammatory process that produce the pain sensation. The effect of this is the potential stopping of a full-blown migraine attack. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with gallstones, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease should first check with their physicians before consuming ginger tea or other products with ginger in it. It is believed that ginger may heighten the risk of bleeding when taken with blood thinners. Constituents in ginger may also interfere or interact with other medications so caution is recommended for concerned individuals. When buying ginger, fresh is best! Be sure to avoid ginger with dry, wrinkled, skin, mold or soft spots. African to Indian ginger are the most potent. Grating or using a garlic press will give you the maximum benefit. Ginger can definitely give you many benefits but more is not always better. An ounce a day should give you all the benefits you will need. |
